WINDS OF FATE
One ship drives east and another drives west,
With the self-same winds that blow,
‘Tis the set of the sails
And not the gales
That tell them the way to go.
Like the winds of the sea are the winds of fate,
As we voyage along through life,
‘Tis the set of the soul
That decides its goal
And not the calm or the strife.
Ella Wheeler Wilcox
The voyage of life is described in the above poem by Ella Wheeler Wilcox. My friend from the Glen, Haze, drew my attention to it and we have been discussing it across our posterous blog spaces.
Haze raises some philosophical questions. Is our life pre-planned?
Is it divinely guided?
Is there such a thing as destiny?
Do we have free will?
My answers to all of the above would centre on belief, its presence within us, and the weight it has within our being.
I believe that our life is pre-planned.
I believe it is divinely guided.
I believe that our destiny is set at or before birth.
I believe that free will is ours if we wish it.
My sense of belief has been tested by life and its range of experiences. I would call it my soul, the spirit which is at the core of my being. I know it is there and have had moments when I have been intimate with it.
I agree with Ella Wilcox’s statement:-
‘Tis the set of the soul
That decides its goal
And not the calm or the strife
What is outside our being can and does influence us, but I believe that our soul is what makes us tick, the essence of life that courses through our veins. There is no need to search for it. It is there. Becoming intimate with it brings us to our core, to the place where oneness is tangible-wholeness a magnificent all-encompassing cloak. To move within is a spiritual journey, one that requires the mind to opt out and release the place and space for the soul to show itself.
