Depression is common these days. It was common in days gone by too, especially following the Second World War when work was hard to come by for returning service personnel and material goods were hard to come by. Life was hard. So much was lost. So many families grieved for loved ones and a future that would never be. The spirit that united the country against the enemy in Europe was transferred to rebuilding homes and cities and workplaces. That change of focus encouraged many to live again and embrace possibility.
A change of focus can often aid a lurch into depression. But it can often be difficult to sustain. Accepting the existence of depression undoubtedly helps, for in that acceptance there is a realisation that for any mental health condition there are ways to cope, to become better, not cured, but at least remain on an even keel. Beating depression needs a step-change. The first step is always the hardest. Been there done it got the tee-shirt and the prescription!!!
January will soon be over, and February will fly past in no time. Bulbs are already showing tentatively above the frozen earth, waiting for the chance to colour our world with life and hope for a springtime to savour. The thought of planting and growing is encouraged as we see light lengthen our days. Tiredness with the awfulness of the weather will pass. We have to wait as time passes, but the waiting will be worth the change. For the change will come and warm the cockles of our hearts with hope. Every day is nearer the warm and welcoming days of springtime, and the glorious and balmy days of summer. Positive focus!!!!!

And to prove it, this photo was taken by my friend Fiona Reid who is in Hawaii!!! We may not have the palm trees, but the sun will shine here in the future!!!!
